So it was two months I put up my device. 2 months
Cad forest almost daily.
What is my job?
In short, it is to see how different species of trees (initially 18, now 9) adapted to an environment light, ie how a change of lighting environment, or a particular light environment influences its growth, its architecture, some properties of its leaves.
For that, I spent two months traveling Paracou forest (mainly primary forest) to look for young trees in a particular light (on a scale of 1 to 4, 1 for an individual workplace closed, 2 for an individual receiving the light side, 3 for an individual receiving direct sunlight, and 4 for an individual in bright, direct and lateral).
This involves individuals in search of windfalls; where trees have fallen a year ago or more, which is not obvious.
Once these individuals found, marked with GPS and / or against a tree when there were numbered, he had to be measured (total height, height of first branch or leaf, crown size, number of branches , leaves, branch level ...), mark the main axis, and three branches at the apex (terminal bud) and count the leaves before and after the mark to be able to track mortality Coy and leaves. Once duly
"equipped", labeled and Co., the tree looks like this:
soon I will take advantage to introduce you to some of these species. So I
currently located and measured 600. I still ironing see forty of them to redo the missing steps, or GPS points in the next few days.
Then, I will characterize the light environment of these young trees. For that, I'll use a camera equipped with a hemispherical lens to photograph the sky. Then, a program locates the portions of sky in the picture, and calculates the amount of light radiation received from the whole point of taking the photo.
This kind of picture unfortunately can not be done in the absence of the sun in the sky, ie just before sunrise or just after sunset.
The third session will aim to field samples of leaves on several units of growth of each individual to study the evolution over time of certain parameters (nitrogen content, leaf thickness, delta C13 etc. ...) after the opening, and their variation with the light environment. These factors measured will include a proxy for studying the efficiency of water use per leaf (ratio transpiration / photosynthesis) photosynthesis ... etc.
